What’s so special about a birch tree?

At Highfields we run a regular Student Voice Group. This functions more or less like a student council and allows students to have their say on school life. Having listened to students, we changed our logo back in January 2019. Since then many of the students involved in the logo design have moved on and we do get questions from time to time about what our logo is meant to represent. So here goes…

  • Firstly, students wanted a more traditional school logo than the one which Highfields had previously – they wanted to feel they belonged to a ‘proper school’…
  • From there, the current logo was chosen because it featured a bird flying from a tree. The bird flying represents the fact all of our students are due to eventually move elsewhere (‘fledge’) and we have to prepare them for this.
  • The blue frame and yellow diamonds are linked to Stockport’s traditional heraldry – highlighting that we see ourselves as being at the heart of Stockport as a community.
  • The yellow diamonds are also positioned like a crown which represents our individual and shared aspirations – as humans beings, we all naturally want to achieve something, to feel ‘glory’.
  • Finally, the tree at the centre of the logo is a birch tree – this was initially shortlisted because it is found around our school site but, from there, it was deliberately chosen for its symbolism, as shown in the display below…
